The production process of OSB generally involves the following steps:
1. Log Preparation:
- Debarking: Logs are sent to a debarking machine to remove the bark. The bark is usually transported to a thermal power plant to be used as a clean fuel for combustion.
- Slicing: The debarked logs are then cut into slices using a chipper. These slices are the basic raw materials for OSB production.
2. Strand Formation: The sliced wood is further processed into strands. The size and shape of the strands can vary depending on the specific requirements of the OSB product.
3. Drying: The strands are dried to remove moisture. This is typically done in a dryer where hot air is circulated to evaporate the water from the strands. Proper drying is crucial to ensure the quality and performance of the final OSB product.
4. Resin Application: A resin or adhesive is applied to the dried strands. The type and amount of resin used depend on factors such as the desired strength and properties of the OSB board.
5. Orientation and Layup: The strands are oriented in a specific direction and laid up in layers. The orientation of the strands in each layer is carefully controlled to provide the required strength and stability to the OSB panel. For example, the strands in the outer layers may be oriented in one direction, while those in the inner layers may be oriented differently to create a cross-laminated structure.
6. Pressing: The layered strands are then subjected to high pressure and temperature in a press. This compresses the strands together and causes the resin to cure, bonding the strands firmly and forming a solid OSB panel. The pressing process also determines the final thickness and density of the OSB board.
7. Cooling and Trimming: After pressing, the OSB panel is cooled to room temperature. It is then trimmed to the desired size and shape, removing any excess edges or imperfections.
8. Quality Control and Inspection: Throughout the production process, various quality control checks are performed to ensure that the OSB meets the required standards. This may include tests for strength, moisture content, dimensional stability, and other properties. Samples may be taken at different stages of production and tested in a laboratory to verify compliance with specifications.
9. Packaging and Storage: The finished OSB panels are packaged to protect them during transportation and storage. They are usually stacked and stored in a warehouse until they are ready to be shipped to customers or used in construction or other applications.
