Germany To China Log And Sawn Timber Export Trend Difference Is Huge
Dec 18, 2023
In the first 10 months of this year, German coniferous log exports to China fell by about 38% year-on-year, totalling 2.84 million m³. German coniferous logs exported to China this year showed an overall downward trend, from 510,000 m³ in January to 170,000 m³ in October. At present, the German local logging industry has not recovered to the level at the beginning of this year, and it is expected that in the fourth quarter of 2023, the German log export to the Chinese market will remain low.
German sawn timber exports to China increased by about 52% year-on-year to a total of 600,000 m³. Since peaking at 126,000 m³ in March this year, there has been a sharp decline. From July to October, these four months maintained a relatively stable sawn timber export volume.

In addition, due to changes in the international situation, Germany has replaced Russia as one of the main timber suppliers to the European Union. So even after the German timber industry recovers in 2024, its timber exports to China may not suddenly increase back to the previous level.
